Following a successful modelling career, Padukone made her acting debut as the titular character of the 2006 Kannada film Aishwarya. In 2007 she played dual roles in Om Shanti Om, a hugely successful melodrama that won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She followed it with roles in the 2008 romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno and the 2009 romance Love Aaj Kal, both of which were commercially successful but earned little praise for her performance. A leading role in the 2010 drama Lafangey Parindey was more favourably received, but critics generally perceived at this time that she had "lost her sparkle".
The 2012 romantic comedy Cocktail proved Padukone's first commercial success in two years, and marked a significant turning point in her career. She earned critical acclaim for her portrayal of an impulsive party girl in the film and received Best Actress nominations at several award ceremonies, including Filmfare. The following year, she established herself as a leading actress of contemporary Hindi cinema with primary roles in the romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and the action romance Chennai Express, both of which are among the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time.
Alongside her acting career, Padukone participates in stage shows, has written columns for an Indian newspaper, and is a prominent celebrity endorser for brands and products. She is cited in the media as one of the most popular and attractive Indian celebrities, and receives substantial media attention for her personal life.
